Radiocarbon Research Cluster

The Radiocarbon Cluster at SUERC is a centre of excellence in radiocarbon science, where world-class expertise in sample preparation and environmental interpretation come together to deliver high-impact research. Our specialists lead innovations in radiocarbon sample pre-treatment and measurement strategies, underpinning research across archaeology, climate science, and carbon cycle studies. The cluster also plays a key role in environmental modelling—including nuclear-related ecology and contaminant tracing—using radiocarbon as a powerful tool to track carbon movement through natural and human-influenced systems. From refining timelines of the past to modelling the dynamics of the present, our work informs science, heritage, and policy at national and international levels.

SUERC Radiocarbon Laboratory

SUERC Radiocarbon Laboratory

Established in 1967 at the University of Glasgow and based at SUERC since 1986, the SUERC Radiocarbon Laboratory analyses over 3,500 samples annually—supported by a rigorous quality assurance programme—and delivers high-precision age measurements for research, heritage, and commercial applications.
