Study with us

SUERC offers a range of studentship and postdoctoral opportunities, providing access to cutting-edge research, world-class analytical facilities, and expert mentorship. Whether you are pursuing a PhD, MSc (by research), or postdoctoral fellowship, we encourage you to explore opportunities to collaborate with our leading researchers.

Studentships   We are proud to be part of two prestigious Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) that fund PhD studentships annually through competitive selection:   IAPETUS Doctoral Training Partnership. IAPETUS unites leading research universities—including Durham, Heriot-Watt, Glasgow, Newcastle, St Andrews, and Stirling—with key research institutions such as the British Antarctic Survey, British Geological Survey, and Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. This partnership trains the next generation of environmental science leaders. SUERC actively participate in this program, advertising funded studentships annually.   E4 Doctoral Training Partnership. The Edinburgh Earth, Ecology and Environment Doctoral Training Partnership (E4 DTP), led by the University of Edinburgh’s School of GeoSciences, is funded by NERC to recruit and train five cohorts of PhD students between 2019 and 2023. SUERC contribute to this partnership, offering funded studentships through competitive selection each year.

In addition to these DTP-funded routes, we also occasionally offer industry-funded studentships. For Scottish students expecting first-class degrees, the Carnegie Trust Scotland provides funding awards. If you are interested in pursuing a research degree using state-of-the-art analytical facilities, we encourage you to contact SUERC staff to explore available opportunities. SUERC is open to discussions regarding self-funded MSc (by research) and PhD projects.
