UKRI Fellowships

SUERC is proud to host and support researchers applying for a wide range of prestigious UKRI fellowships. These fellowships provide outstanding opportunities for early-career and established researchers to develop independent careers, pursue ambitious research agendas, and access world-class facilities. As the Centre of the Isotope Sciences, SUERC offers a unique environment for fellows working across Earth, environmental, archaeological, biomedical, and planetary sciences. With access to advanced instrumentation, UKRI-funded national facilities, and interdisciplinary research clusters, fellows benefit from an ecosystem designed to foster innovation, collaboration, and impact.

We actively support applications to key schemes such as: UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships (FLF) – for exceptional researchers ready to lead transformative projects across disciplines. NERC Independent Research Fellowships (IRF) – for early-career environmental scientists aiming to build international research profiles. Other council fellowships – including BBSRC, MRC, and cross-UKRI opportunities supporting mobility, career returners, and policy engagement

Fellowships hosted at SUERC are embedded within vibrant research teams and supported by experienced mentors, ensuring a strong foundation for long-term research leadership.

European Research Funding at SUERC

SUERC actively participates in major European funding programmes, including Horizon Europe and European Research Council (ERC) grants, positioning us as a global research collaborator and innovation hub.

Horizon Europe

  • Horizon Europe (2021–2027) is the EU’s flagship research & innovation programme, with a total budget of around €95.5 billion, fully accessible to UK-based researchers under current UK association arrangements. SUERC is eligible to participate in consortium-led or hosted projects, enabling funding for projects aligned with its research priorities such as climate resilience, carbon cycling, marine science, and environmental innovation.

European Research Council (ERC)

  • The ERC forms a central pillar of Horizon Europe, offering investigator-driven Starting, Consolidator, Advanced, Synergy, and Proof of Concept grants focused exclusively on research excellence. Between 2021 and 2027, the ERC has a budget of approximately €16 billion, representing ~17% of Horizon Europe’s resources. UK-based institutions like SUERC can host ERC grants—fully funded and administered through UKRI under government guarantee arrangements for UK applicants.
